MEASURABLE BEHAVIORAL OBJECTIVE TEMPLATE

Please feel free to use the following templates to create your measurable behavioral objectives and plans.  If you have any questions, after completing this, you can click here and then click on the comments section and send your objective for a critique and assistance.  Do not include the name of the child or any information that would make it easy for others to identify the identity of the child.

Who:

(Name of child)

WHAT: (What do you want the child to do.)

WHEN: (Cue that will tell the child it is time to do this.)  This can be a verbal prompt i.e. “Charlie would you please…” or it can be a natural prompt i.e. when the morning alarm goes off or when Charlie gets out of bed or after Charlie pulls his pants up or within 1 minute of leaving the breakfast table or every time _____ etc.

CRITERIA: (How will you know that this objective has been accomplished?)  This needs to be specific and easy to collect data for.  In the case of a safety issue, it should always be 100% (the only thing that should change is the assistance level).  An example would be 3 out of 4 trials for 3 consecutive weeks or 45% of the time for three consecutive weeks.  Be careful about saying an average over multiple weeks or months as this can paint a very inaccurate picture in your data collection and reporting.

FOR EXAMPLE:  This may be written in the form of: ________ will _________ when ________, 5 out of 7 trials for 6 consecutive days.

Remember, proper preparation almost always saves time and money over the long run.

Writing a Plan for Problem Behaviors

Plan Writing Work Sheet
Complete all that apply. In most cases all will apply.

What is the problem behavior?

What is the function of the problem behavior? What benefit is the child getting from this? Remember that the same problem behavior may derive different benefit in different settings.

What are the setting events that may impact this behavior?

 Measurable Behavioral Objective:

1. (Who) Whose behavior is being modified? (name of child)

2. (What) What behavior do you want to increase or initiate? (What do you want the child to do?)

3. (When) What is the cue that will tell the child that it is time to do the behavior? (When will the child do it?)

4. (How) How will you know that the objective has been met?  (What criteria does the child have to meet for you and others to know that this objective has been met and that it is time to move on? Note:  Moving on may mean changing the criteria or moving to the next logical step.)

What is the current baseline for the desired behavior? (Don’t know, is unacceptable. Trials should be run during the functional assessment or previous therapy)

What is the reinforcement for the child if the child completes the desired behavior as prescribed?

If the reinforcement is contrived and not natural, how will you move to a natural reinforcement?

What will be the reaction of the therapist (or parent) if the child does not do the desired behavior within the prescribed time (if there is a prescribed time)?

What additionally will be done to prevent the problem behavior?

What will be done to minimize aversives in this interaction?

When this objective is achieved, what will likely be the next step?

How will this skill (behavior) be generalized?

Could any therapist or the parent pick up the plan, carry it out and collect data as required without any additional background or discussion?
Yes ____ No ____

Have others who are unfamiliar with the child and background read it and find out.

Translating an objective into data collection.

Remember, keep the objective as simple as possible and you keep the data collection simple.  Complicate the objective and complicate the data collection.

What is the child supposed to do?  List everything as outlined in the objective.

What are the additional variables (if there are any)?  For example: amount of time it is to be done within,  how it is to be done,  et etc.

How will you track each thing the child is to do and each variable?

For a simple example: when x happens, Johnny will do y, 4 out of 5 trials for four consecutive weeks.

Simple data collection.  You only need to collect if Johnny did y when x happened.

A little more complicated example:  when x happens, Johnny will do y within 30 seconds, 4 out of 5 trials for four consecutive weeks.

A little more complicated as you should really record if Johnny does y and if he does it within 30 seconds.  You should also graph the results to demonstrate meeting criteria or where the problems occur.
